The incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump should not dismantle Washington’s nuclear deal with Iran, former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mike Mullen said Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The retired Navy admiral, who headed the Joint Chiefs under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, said the United States has seen enough wars in the Middle East, and he urged the new administration to look at the Iran agreement "very carefully."

"I think tearing the deal up would be a mistake," Mullen told attendees at the Washington Ideas Roundtable organized by the Aspen Institute.

Mullen added that he has not seen any proposed alternative to the deal, which was signed in July 2015.

Iran and the P5+1 group of nations – the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia plus Germany – agreed that in exchange for Tehran keeping its nuclear program exclusively for peaceful uses, there would be a gradual lifting of sanctions on Iran. The agreement took effect on January 16, after the International Atomic Energy Agency officially confirmed Iran’s compliance with the deal’s provisions.
