TOKYO (Sputnik) — On Monday, Trump said that the United States would withdraw from the TPP agreement on the first day of his tenure as president in January.
"At this stage I would like to withhold comments based on assumptions regarding the details of the new [US] administration’s policy. We would like to reach understanding with the new administration," Kishida said, as quoted by the NHK broadcaster.
Trump repeatedly criticized the TPP during his election campaign and expressed the desire to shift the focus from the global trade to national economic development in order to support the US economy. Following his victory in the US presidential elections, the future of the deal is now in question.
The TPP is an agreement aimed at removing barriers to trade among its 12 signatories, which together account for 40 percent of the world's economy: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.
