MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Lawmakers in Vietnam' 498-member unicameral National Assembly voted to scrap the Southeast Asian country's nuclear program earlier in the day. The Vietnamese government explained that the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project was canceled because of the country's "current economic conditions."
"We treat with understanding the situation of our customer and are ready to provide comprehensive support to Vietnam when the country returns to the implementation of the national nuclear program," the spokesperson told reporters.
According to the spokesperson, Russia and Vietnam have cooperated successfully in the nuclear sphere for many years.
"The nuclear research in Dalat will assist Vietnam with Russia’s support in continuing to develop nuclear and radiation technologies and form the necessary infrastructure which will serve as the basis for development of the country’s peaceful nuclear program," the spokesperson added.
