WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Approximately 300 protesters were injured on Sunday as they were attacked by law-enforcement while protesting the building of the pipeline. Twenty-six suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital in the region, the release stated.
"Once again, we call on President Obama to stop this pipeline and the violence resulting from it, and to deny the easement," Archambault said on Tuesday. "The reckless escalation of violence by the Morton County Sheriff’s Department is unconscionable and preventable. It must stop now."
The $3.7-billion Dakota Access Pipeline is envisioned to transport domestically-produced light crude oil from North Dakota through the US states of South Dakota and Iowa to Illinois.
The Standing Rock Sioux opposes the building of the pipeline on the basis it will affect their water sources and violate sacred places, including burial sites.
