MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US media reports emerged on November 18 that Trump was considering Petraeus and retired Marine Gen. James Mattis for the position of secretary of defense.
"I've been in a position before where a president has turned to me… and said: 'I'm asking you as your president and commander in chief to take command of the international security assistance force in Afghanistan.' The only response can be: 'yes, Mr. President,’“ Petraeus told BBC Radio 4’s Today program when asked if he would serve in Trump’s administration if selected.
General Petraeus commanded US and NATO troops in Afghanistan and multinational forces in Iraq, before retiring from the military to take a position in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2011. He resigned as the CIA director in 2012 following a scandal over Petraeus' extra-marital affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell.
