MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian Navy will commission on November 24 the sixth and final Varshavyanka class diesel-electric submarine built for deployment with the Black Sea Fleet, navy spokesman Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said Wednesday.
"Russia's Admiralty Verf shipyard will hold the commissioning ceremony for Kolpino diesel-electric submarine [Project 636.3]," Dygalo said.
"The sub is the final in the series of six boats of this class built specifically for the Black Sea Fleet," the official added.
The Varshavyanka class is an improved version of Kilo-class submarines that features elements of advanced stealth technology, extended combat rang,e and the ability to strike land, surface and underwater targets.
The submarines are mainly intended for anti-ship and anti-submarine missions in coastal waters.
