US President-elect Donald Trump should retract campaign pledges that could violate human rights or international law, Human Rights Watch Executive Director Ken Roth said in a letter to the newly elected American leader on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The watchdog explained that torture, which Trump pledged to reinstate for terror suspects, violates international law as well as US laws, including the War Crimes Act.

"We believe it imperative that you explicitly retract the following proposals that would violate or threaten core human rights under US law or the international legal obligations of the United States," the letter stated.

Additionally, Roth urged Trump to reconsider his promise to expand indefinite detention at the US military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The 15-year program has damaged US credibility on human rights and compromised alliances, Roth stressed.

Likewise, Trump's proposal to deport or incarcerate as many as three million undocumented immigrants would threaten due process and put the United States "on course for massive rights violations," he said.

Furthermore, the letter urged Trump to reconsider cooperating with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar Assad to end the war in Syria and defeat Daesh and other terror groups.

During his election campaign, Trump said his priority in Syria would be to eliminate Daesh and not remove Assad from power. He signaled an eagerness to cooperate with Moscow and Damascus to fight terrorism and help end the conflict in Syria.

Roth noted that Trump has recently backtracked on some of the proposals and urged him to unequivocally retract them.
