MEXICO (Sputnik) — The statement comes after a new peace deal was signed earlier in the day by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Londono, also known as Timochenko.
“We hope that Trump’s administration will play aprominent role in ensuring peace in the world and on our continent,” Londono said as broadcast by a local television.
He also apologized to victims of Colombia’s armed conflict.
“A word must be the only weapon that Colombians will be allowed to use,” the FARC leader stressed.
The original peace deal was rejected by the people of Colombia in a referendum on October 2.
FARC was formed in 1964 as the military wing of Colombia's Communist Party. The half-century war between the FARC and the Colombian government claimed the lives of a quarter of a million people. The two sides began peace talks in November 2012.
