WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) is providing multi-warfare defense to the Charles de Gaulle Carrier Strike Group from the Eastern Mediterranean in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the release stated on Wednesday.
The support allows the United States to demonstrate shared commitment to the region by providing multi-mission capable platforms with strike; ballistic missile defense; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, the release noted.
"Strike group operations from the Mediterranean support the fight against ISIL [Islamic State] and demonstrate the multi-mission capability of the aircraft carrier strike group, which includes guided-missile destroyers that are simultaneously operating in the US 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation," the release also said.
The US destroyer Ross was previously assigned to the Charles de Gaulle strike group from mid-September to late October to provide support.
