MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) The deaths occurred in the wake of heavy rains brought by the hurricane, Diario Las Americas news portal reported, citing the official. Among the victims is a little boy who died in a car as it was hit by a fallen tree, and two teenagers who drowned in the river.

Thousands of people were evacuated earlier in Nicaragua and Panama are still remaining in temporary shelters.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Otto has weakened to a tropical storm over Nicaragua and is expected to move to the Pacific Ocean in the upcoming hours.

Tropical storm Otto strengthened to become the seventh hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season earlier this week, with sustained winds of up to 190 kilometers per hour (118 miles per hour).
