MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the news agency, the incident took place at a station near the city of Shahroud at around 7:40 a.m. local time (04:10 GMT). One of the trains crashed into another, and as a result, four carriages were derailed, while two of them started burning.

The rescue operation is hampered by severe weather conditions, which include heavy snow and sleet, the agency reported.
The number of fatalities and casualties is expected to rise.
