Fidel Castro’s Death Heralds Period of Change for Cuba
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Cuba’s hard-earned sovereignty may not withstand the test of foreign capital and the involvement of major political powers after the death of its former leader Fidel Castro, Cuban-born political writer Samuel Farber told Sputnik on Saturday.

"In light of a likely future state capitalist transition based on the model of China and Vietnam, and the role that foreign capital and political powers, such as the U.S., Russia and China, are likely to play in it, the prospect for Cuban national sovereignty — perhaps the only unambiguously positive element of Fidel Castro's legacy — is uncertain," Farber said.

Fidel Castro, one of the world’s longest-serving leaders, died late Friday at the age of 90. He retired from politics years ago, leaving the reigns in the hands of his brother Raul. The incumbent president is pursuing a more open-market policy, including better ties with the United States which has maintained an economic embargo on the island nation since 1960.
