Iranian Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani has ordered an inquiry into Friday's train collision in Iran’s north-central province that killed dozens.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Friday morning a collision between two passenger trains occurred at Haft-Khan station near the city of Shahroud, Semnan province. The crash derailed four carriages and caused a large fire, while a heavy snowfall and icy roads impeded the rescue operation.

The country's top judge ordered the Chief Justice of Semnan to investigate the cause of the incident and to take legal action against those responsible. He also extended his condolences and expressed grief for the victims of the crash, Tasnim News reported on Saturday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has also ordered an investigation into the cause of the deadly crash and the prevention of any recurrence of such incidents.

According to reports, the death toll has risen to 45, while dozens of other people were injured.
