KIEV (Sputnik) — Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said on Saturday that he had tasked the Foreign Ministry with resuming its work on the international recognition of Holodomor as a genocide against Ukrainians.
"I just signed a presidential decree… which also tasks the Foreign Ministry with resuming its work on recognition of Holodomor as a genocide against the Ukrainian people by the world community including states and international organizations," Poroshenko said during his speech on Holodomor Remembrance Day.
On November 26, Ukraine commemorates victims of 1932-1933 famine, which, according to the Ukrainian law, is recognized as a genocide against Ukrainians. The famine spread across southern regions of the Soviet Union including Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in the early 30s claiming lives of up to 7 million people.
In 2008, the UN General Assembly voted against recognizing the Ukrainian famine as genocide.
