Voting Ends in Republican Primaries Runoff Across France

The voting has been declared closed on Sunday after almost 3 million turned out to cast ballots in the runoff of the conservative primaries in France, organizers said.

PARIS (Sputnik) — The organizing committee issued a declaration wrapping up the second tour at 7 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT), saying no more votes would be accepted.

As of 5 p.m., 2.9 million voted in the center-right primaries for The Republicans presidential nomination that pitted two former prime ministers, Francois Fillon and Alain Juppe.

The committee said the turnout at last Sunday’s tour was estimated at 2.8 million.

Fillon is largely seen as the favorite to win the party's nomination after securing slightly over 44 percent of votes in the first round. Juppe came second with 28.5 percent of votes.
