MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Juanita Castro, the sister of the Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, who died on Friday at the age of 90 years old, said she regretted the death of her brother, but was not going to attend the funeral ceremony.

"As for the twisted rumors that I am going to Cuba for the funeral ceremony, I would like to say that I have never returned to the island and I have no such plans," Juanita Castro said, as quoted by Mexican newspaper Nuevo Herald on Sunday.

Juanita Castro has been living in the United States since 1964, where she moved to after accusing Fidel of turning Cuba into a prison. Since then she has been repeatedly criticizing Cuban authorities.

She noted that Fidel Castro's death provides an opportunity for separated Cubans to restore mutual understanding.

"I am in favor of a way, which would not lead to confrontation and hatred, but would eventually unite all of us," she said.

Castro, the Cuban revolutionary and former president, survived hundreds of assassination attempts and nearly a dozen US presidents. His death was announced by his brother and the incumbent Cuban President Raul Castro. A funeral ceremony has been scheduled for December 4, and will be held at a cemetery in Santiago de Cuba. Cuba has received a flood of condolences from leaders around the world, including from Russia and the United States.
