MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Green Party initiative to decommission three of the five reactors next year, the fourth one in 2024 and the last one by 2029 was rejected by 54 percent of votes to 46 percent, the Swiss broadcaster SRF reported.
Swiss reactors provide a third of the country’s electricity. Environmentalists argued that safety of old reactors, in operation since the early 1970s, could no longer be guaranteed, while their opponents said nuclear phaseout could increase reliance on coal.
The Swiss government vowed to shut down nuclear plants and begin green power transition by 2050 in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima meltdown.
