The Royal Canadian Air Force announced Monday that a CF-18 fighter jet has crashed, resulting in the death of the pilot.

On Monday afternoon the RCAF said that it had dispatched a team of helicopters to search for the downed pilot in Cold Lake, Alberta, but that effort has ended.

"Tragically, we can confirm that the pilot did not survive the accident," the RCAF tweeted Monday afternoon. The RCAF declined to name the pilot until their next of kin has been informed.

The crash was first reported at 11:09 am inside the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range near Saskatchewan. The pilot was flying a CF-188 Hornet, commonly referred to as a CF-18 Hornet.
