HAVANA (Sputnik) — The revolutionary leader died on Friday, at the age of 90 years old, as announced by his brother, incumbent Cuban President Raul Castro, on state television on Saturday. Funeral ceremony scheduled for December 4 will take place in the Cuban city of Santiago de Cuba.
The popular ceremony started at 9 a.m. local time (14:00 GMT) and the number of participants has significantly increased since then.
The Cubans are moving through the city to the Revolution Square, where the cinerary urn with Castro's ashes is situated to commemorate the former president.
On Monday and Tuesday, residents of Havana will be able to pay their last respects to the politician. The funeral of Castro has been set for December 4 and is expected to be held at the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia in the country's second largest city of Santiago de Cuba.
