"The people of Michigan spoke, and it’s our job to deliver that message" Michael Banerian, youth vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party, told The Detroit News. Banerian sees himself as next-generation millennial dedicated to upholding the integrity of the electoral system.
According to the elector, Trump opponents have emailed him, calling him a hateful bigot and threatening to shove a gun in his mouth and blow his brains out. "Even the non-threatening-my-life emails are very aggressive," Banerian said.
Banerian suggested in a recent op-ed that if an elector casts a vote for anyone besides Trump, the vote should be nullified and the elector should be replaced. Further, electors are obliged to represent their own states, rendering threats from outside of Michigan’s borders inappropriate, at best.
Monday, the Michigan State Board of Canvassers will convene to certify the results of the election, the Detroit Free Press reported. There has been some discussion of a vote recount in Michigan, where President-elect Trump won the state’s 16 electoral votes by a razor-thin margin of just 10,704 votes.
But even the left-leaning FiveThirtyEight blog, which, along with 95 percent of the Western mainstream press, predicted a Clinton victory, noted that recounts typically have a negligible impact on election outcomes. Between 2000 and 2015, there have been 27 statewide recounts, FiveThirtyEight reports, and just three of those recounts altered the original outcome of the election.
