WARSAW (Sputnik) — Trump repeatedly said during his presidential campaign that Washington should review its relationswith NATO allies which he insisted should pay more for having their security guaranteed by the United States.
"The United States and NATO have been together from the very beginning. NATO was established to serve the US interests, not only European interests. We, the Germans, through NATO, through our US partners have obtained security, which allowed us to maintain our freedom, at least in the western part of Germany," Gauck said at a press conference following a meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda.
It is hard to imagine that the US president… would abandon the basic idea of the alliance's defense. I can not imagine that," Gauck said.
