Ukraine's amnesty law for protesters in the deadly 2014 anti-government demonstrations are unconstitutional and block investigations into the killings of special forces members, former President Viktor Yanukovych said Monday.

KIEV (Sputnik) — Ukrainian lawmakers adopted an amnesty bill in February 2014 freeing the detained protesters from criminal charges.

"In in my view, it directly violates the Constitution of Ukraine," Yanukovych said during questioning over the events.

"This law generally blocked the investigation of those criminal offenses that have taken place during the protests in Maidan [Kiev's main square]."

He noted that investigating the deaths in the Maidan "is impossible without taking into account both sides."

"It is imperative to investigate the killing of law enforcement officers who died during these events," Yanukovych maintained, referring to the 10 Berkut troops killed in mid-February.
