France hopes to schedule an emergency Security Council meeting to discuss the situation in Syria by Wednesday, French Envoy to the UN Francois Delattre told reporters before a Security Council meeting.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Earlier on Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called on the UN Security Council to convene an emergency meeting in order to resolve the humanitarian situation the Syrian city of Aleppo.

"We are working with the Senegalese presidency [at the UN Security Council] to find the time for this meeting with the briefing we hope from the UN stakeholders. We hope we’ll be able to schedule it by tomorrow," Delattre said Tuesday.

Delattre also announced that the United Kingdom and France plan to propose a draft resolution to sanction those who are responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, building on the conclusions of UN-OPCW Joint Investigation Mission (JIM) and the recent renewal of its mandate.

According to the envoy, the Security Council "should react strongly and unanimously" to the proliferation and use of the weapons of mass destruction.

On October 27, the JIM expert panel released its latest report claiming that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons at least three times in the country throughout 2014-2015. An earlier report said Daesh terrorist group was also responsible for several attacks.
