Nieto will be accompanied by Foreign Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu. According to the ministry, Nieto's presence at the memorial service would reflect the respect of the Mexicans to the Cuban people, as well as reflect very good relations between the two countries.
"It is also a recognition of Comandante Fidel Castro… who has always been a friend of Mexico and promoted the bilateral relations, based on respect, dialogue and solidarity," the Mexican Foreign Ministry said.
The Cuban revolutionary leader died on Friday, at the age of 90 years old, as announced by his brother, incumbent Cuban President Raul Castro, on state television on Saturday. The funeral of Castro has been set for December 4 and is expected to be held at the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia in the country's second largest city of Santiago de Cuba.
