Russia and Iran initialed an agreement on easing of the visa regime between the two nations. In an interview with Sputnik, press attache of the Russian Embassy in Tehran, Andrey Ganenko, stated that previous media reports saying that the agreement had already been signed are false.

At the moment, the countries are trying to come terms with each other, discussing several provisions of the agreement, Ganenko said in an interview with Sputnik Persian.

The diplomat confirmed that the agreement had been discussed at a consulate department director meeting of the two countries in Tehran. However, the deal has not yet been signed, the diplomat said.

Earlier, it was reported that the Russian and Iranian foreign ministry's consular department chiefs had signed an agreement to simplify the visa regime and increase tourist flows between the two nations.

"Contrary to the previous information, the agreement has not yet been signed. It has only been initialed. Discussion of the details of the agreement will continue during the next rounds of consultations," Ganenko stated.

The diplomat also noted it is too early to make any conclusions about the deal.

"It is too early to talk about any concrete results and agreements. The date of the next meeting has not yet been determined. The agreement provides for reciprocal, equal preferences for tourist groups from both countries. Its format could resemble that of the agreement between Russia and China," Ganenko said.

On Sunday, Maya Lomidze, executive director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, told Sputnik that the visa agreement between Russia and Iran may significantly increase tourist flows between the two countries. She also expressed the hope that the agreement will enter into force in 2017.
