WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Elaine Chao to head the US Department of Transportation, a press release from the transition team stated.
"President-elect Donald J. Trump today announced his intent to nominate Elaine Chao to serve as Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation," the release stated on Tuesday.
Having served as Deputy Secretary at the Transportation Department and Secretary of the Labor Department, "Chao brings unparalleled experience and insight to the role," the release added.
Chao is quoted as saying in the release that she is honored to be nominated. She also noted that Trump has laid out a clear vision for transforming the country's infrastructure, speeding up economic growth and creating more well-paying jobs.
Chao served as the US Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush and is married to US Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell.
