WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The plan by outgoing President Barack Obama to slash US greenhouse gas emissions is failing to meet its deadline and may not do so even by 2022, a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report said.
"The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program is unlikely to meet its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expanding the US renewable fuels sector," the report stated on Monday.
The GAO explained that advanced biofuels — fuels that achieve the most greenhouse gas reductions — are not being produced at the necessary levels, and they likely will not be even by 2022.
"Less than five percent of the three billion gallon advanced biofuel RFS target was produced in 2015, and additional investments for commercialization seem unlikely," the report acknowledged.
There is limited production of advanced biofuels to be blended into domestic transportation fuels and limited potential for expanded production by 2022, the GAO warned.
