HAVANA (Sputnik) — The ceremony took place at the Revolution Square in Cuba’s capital on Tuesday evening and gathered world leaders from African and Latin American countries, with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras representing the European Union. Russian parliament’s lower house speaker Vyacheslav Volodin headed the delegation from Moscow.
The ceremony comprised 18 speakers who paid their tribute to Cuba's longstanding revolutionary leader, with his brother and incumbent Cuban President Raul Castro closing the commemorative event.
Fidel Castro passed away on November 25 at the age of 90. Cuba received many condolences over Castro's death from leaders around the world.
The farewell ceremony for Castro began in Cuba on Monday and will last for nine days. The funeral ceremony scheduled for December 4 will take place in the city of Santiago de Cuba.
