MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The chairman added that global warming may flood 20 percent of Bangladesh thereby provoking the flow of refugees from the country. The ongoing global migration and refugee crisis is provoked by food scarcity, water insecurity and extreme weather, becoming a new normal, GMACCC member and member of US Department of State’s foreign affairs policy board Brig. Gen. Stephen Cheney said.
"Climate change is the greatest security threat of the 21st century … We’re going to see refugee problems on an unimaginable scale, potentially above 30 million people [just in Bangladesh]," GMACCC Chairman Maj. Gen. Munir Muniruzzaman said, as quoted by the Guardian on Thursday.
According to the United Nations, more than 65 million people are displaced worldwide, including 21.3 million refugees. European nations received nearly two million asylum requests in 2015, almost three times more than the previous year’s number.
Climate change has become a priority for many countries. On November 4, the Paris Agreement on climate change was ratified by 111 countries and came into force. The deal aims to limit global average temperatures to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial level, with parties to the deal agreeing to cut their emissions in accordance with the proposed plan.
