MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Nothing threatens the crew of the Russian general cargo ship Volgo Don-203, which ran aground on Friday off Istanbul's Kartal district in the Sea of Marmara, a spokesperson for the Russian consulate general in Istanbul said.

"The Russian vessel Volgo Don-203 ran aground in the Kartal district at about 09:00 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT). The consulate general is in contact with the coast guard, which is now engaged in the incident. Nothing threatens to the crew, as we have been informed. They are currently providing necessary assistance to the crew," the spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, weather conditions have become worse, it is hailing and the strong wind is blowing.

Earlier in the day, Turkish media reported that the Russian vessel had run ashore in Istanbul's Kartal district due bad weather conditions. According to the Daily Sabah newspaper, coast guards, naval police, emergency medical teams, and fire squads have been deployed to the site of accident.
