HAVANA (Sputnik) — A funeral procession with the urn containing the ashes of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro arrived in Santiago de Cuba on Saturday.
The caravan carrying the urn with the ashes recreated, in reverse, the route Castro followed to reach Havana, known as the Caravana de la Libertad or Freedom Caravan, in January 1959 during his successful rebellion. The revolutionaries traveled more than 1,000 kilometers, entering the Cuban capital on January 8.
The procession was greeted by hundreds of thousands of Cubans who took to the streets to say goodbye to the revolutionary leader.
Fidel Castro passed away on November 25 at the age of 90. Cuba received many condolences over Castro's death from leaders around the world. On Saturday night, a mass memorial service, led by his brother and incumbent leader Raul Castro, will be held in the city. The funeral ceremony will take place in the morning on December 4.
