Lavrov: Russia-Japan Cooperation Important for Asia-Pacific Security
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting in Moscow with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida and discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula among other issues.

"The sides welcomed the new UN Security Council resolution… the ministers pledged to jointly work in order to make this resolution as much effective as possible," Masato Otaka told reporters.

On Wednesday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the draft resolution condemning "in the strongest terms" the nuclear test conducted by North Korea on September 9. The resolution prohibited UN members from buying a number of North Korean exports, including coal and several metals. The resolution contains a list of North Korean officials and organizations, who will be banned from entering other countries and whose assets will be frozen.

The UN Security Council adopted the first resolution on North Korea in 1993. In 2016, the Council held 9 emergency consultations in response to Pyongyang’s nuclear test and ballistic missile launches. This year the country conducted two nuclear tests and at least 25 launches using ballistic missile technology.
