WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The letter was signed by former Attorneys’ General John Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzales, Michael Mukasey, William Barr and Edmund Meese, all of whom served under Republican presidents.
"Senator Session’s career, both as a United States attorney and as a senator, well prepares him for the role of attorney general," the letter released on Monday read. "In sum, Senator Sessions is superbly qualified by temperament, intellect and experience to serve as this nation’s chief law enforcement officer."
Supporters point to Sessions’ vote to confirm Eric Holder, US President Barack Obama’s first attorney general; his vote to extend the US Civil Rights Act; multiple desegregation lawsuits he filed as US attorney in the state of Alabama; and other actions throughout his career in support of minority rights.
Five former deputy attorneys general also signed the letter.
