MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the ministry, 59.11 percent of votes were against, while 40.89 percent were in favor of the reform, with the turnout 65.47 percent.
The counting of votes cast abroad finished at 07:26 a.m. local time (06:26 GMT), while the counting on the territory of Italy stopped at 04:17 a.m. local time.
The referendum on the constitutional reform proposed by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in 2014 took place on Sunday. The proposal implied limiting Senate powers to speed up lawmaking process.
Earlier in the day, Renzi vowed to resign after Italians rejected the reform as a result of the referendum.
