The two chambers of the California state legislature passed resolutions asking US President-elect Donald Trump to abandon his campaign promise to rapidly deport potentially millions of undocumented residents, head of the Senate’s office said in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to the release, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de Leon led their respective chambers to adopt identical resolutions that ask the President-elect not to employ a mass-deportation strategy.

The California State Assembly and State Senate, the release explained, took immediate action to “inoculate the potential impact of President-elect Donald Trump’s stated plans to deport up to 3 million undocumented residents.”

New bills were also introduced to strengthen due process rights and protections for undocumented residents if Trump pushes ahead with his program, the release continued.

Undocumented workers comprised about ten percent of California’s workforce, contribute $130 billion in the state’s gross domestic product and pay billions in state and local taxes, the resolutions said, according to the release.
