Scheduled to undergo a kidney transplant, India’s Foreign Minister is still helping out the distressed from her hospital bed. Sushma Swaraj has ensured a visa for an Egyptian woman after the Indian embassy had turned down her request to travel to India for medical treatment.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who herself is undergoing treatment for kidney failure, has come to the rescue of an Egyptian woman, considered to be ‘world's heaviest woman'. The surgeon of the woman had reached out to Swaraj via twitter after Egyptian's visa to India for medical treatment was refused through normal process.

The 36-year-old Eman Ahmed, weighing 500 kg, was refused an Indian visa for medical treatment. But her doctor reached out to Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj via Twitter and explained the medical needs of his patient.

Dr. Muffi Lakdawala, a bariatric surgeon and founder of the Mumbai based Center for Obesity and Digestive Surgery, tweeted to Indian foreign Minister, seeking her intervention in the emergency case.

Minister Swaraj, who herself is undergoing treatment for kidney failure at premier state-owned Indian hospital All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), however, lost no time and tweeted back thanking the doctor for bringing the case to her notice and promising to definitely help Eman.

Iman Ahmad Abdulati, a resident of Alexandria, reportedly suffers from a disruption of the glands as well as from a parasite called elephantiasis. While disruption of glands causes her body to store huge amounts of water, the parasite causes extreme swelling in her body. She has reportedly not left her house from 25 years, from the age of 11, as she also suffers from a cerebral stroke, which has left her bedridden. She lives with her sister and mother.

According to news reports, the doctors in Egypt have been unable to help her with the weight and Abdulati's family had posted a plea online to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi asking for medical assistance.
