Jayalalithaa, born in 1948, was an actress who switched to politics in the early 1980s. She first became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 1991 and served four non-consecutive terms after that. The minister was hospitalized on September 22 with fever and other symptoms and suffered a cardiac arrest on the evening of December 4.
