BERLIN (Sputnik) — A total of 89.5 percent of the party's congress delegates in Essen voted for her candidacy.
Merkel has led the party since 2000. She will in 2017 nominate her candidacy once again for the post of Germany's chancellor — a post she has held since 2005.
Angela Merkel officially confirmed her intention to run for the fourth term as German chancellor on November 11.
The chancellor in Germany is chosen following the results of the parliamentary election. Either the winning party or a coalition can propose a candidate.
