Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim expressed hope on Tuesday that exploitation of the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant would start by 2023 as planned.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia and Turkey signed an agreement to construct and operate Turkey’s first nuclear power plant at the Akkuyu site in the southern Turkish province of Mersin in May 2010. The plant is expected to produce about 35 billion kilowatt-hours a year.

We want the first Turkish NPP to have been launched by this moment," Yildirim said during a meeting with students of the MGIMO university in Moscow.

He also said that energy cooperation was a cornerstone of the Russian-Turkish cooperation.
