MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia and Turkey signed an agreement to construct and operate Turkey’s first nuclear power plant at the Akkuyu site in the southern Turkish province of Mersin in May 2010. The plant is expected to produce about 35 billion kilowatt-hours a year.

"Hopefully, the first unit of the Akkuyu NPP would have been put in operation by 2023 when Turkey will celebrate the 100th anniversary of proclamation of the Turkish republic. We want the first Turkish NPP to have been launched by this moment," Yildirim said during a meeting with students of the MGIMO university in Moscow.
He also said that energy cooperation was a cornerstone of the Russian-Turkish cooperation.
