Russian hackers will test messenger apps for further use by Russian officials, while an antivirus program will be integrated into the most resistant applications, media reported on Wednesday, citing sources in the Russia-based Institute of Internet Development (IID).

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Izvestia newspaper, the IID chose 13 messengers which would be tested till February 2017, though the testing period could be extended by mutual consent of producers and government agencies. The most secure apps would be also checked by cybersecurity experts before integrating an antivirus program into the best messenger.

"Experts of a few major players at the market of information security and countering cyberthreats suggest implementing a concept of the active information protection in the state messenger. This model consists of an effective anti-virus, a complex of checks on the vulnerability to cyberattacks, and a cryptography system," IID project activities director Arseny Shcheltsin was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

On December 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin named cybersecurity among the country’s priorities, while delivering annual state of the nation address to the parliament. He said it was "necessary to strengthen security against cyberthreats, to considerably increase sustainability of all elements of infrastructure, financial system, system of public administration."
