Russian authorities must tackle the issue of using social networks for extremist activities very carefully and do not consider every activity as extremism, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Daesh terror group, outlawed in Russia, is actively using social networks such as Facebook to disseminate its ideas and recruit new members from all over the world.

"As we know well, social networks are being used for extremist activities more and more often … That must be tackled very carefully. But of course [we] must not surreptitiously regard everything [as extremism]," Putin said, commenting on the National Anti-Corruption Committee Chairman Kirill Kabanov’s initiative to hear extremist cases at the level of district courts.

Moscow is concerned about Daesh efforts to recruit new followers among young people in the Islamic-dominated North Caucasus region, where the Islamic fundamentalist group Imarat Kavkaz (Caucasus Emirate) operates.
