The disbursement of a new assistance tranche to Ukraine is unlikely before the end of 2016, International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesperson Gerry Rice said in a briefing on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In March 2015, the IMF approved a four-year program of financial aid to Ukraine, which stipulates a $17.5 billion loan to be paid out in installments over four years and originally open for review on a quarterly basis.

"It is probably unlikely," Rice said when asked if it is possible to complete the process before the year end.

The IMF mission visited Kiev in November and had "constructive discussions" with the authorities on the policies needed to complete the third review under the assistance program, Rice noted.

"Good progress has been made," he said. "The authorities need some more time to implement policies to ensure medium-term fiscal sustainability."

The spokesperson noted that the IMF had also conducted an article IV assessment of the Ukrainian economy and the IMF board would review the outcome of these discussions "soon."
