Trudeau Pledges $785Mln to Fight HIV and Tuberculosis Globally
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The money will be used to establish a regional research center and a network of laboratories to cope with the deadly illness that is characterized by a chronic cough with bloody sputum, the release noted.

"The project will specifically build on efforts of the [Mozambique] government and development partners to improve laboratory systems and management of drug-resistant TB," the release explained on Wednesday.

While TB is relatively rare in the developed world, the World Bank project will target nations in Southern Africa where drug-resistant versions of the disease are becoming increasingly common: Mozambique, Lesotho, Malawi and Zambia, according to the release.

The nations suffer from high rates of infections with the HIV virus, which not only causes AIDS, but increases susceptibility to TB, the release added.
