Bulgarian right-wing Reformist Bloc coalition will cease its attempts to form a new government and will hand back the mandate to the president next week, the co-leader of the bloc faction Nayden Zelenogorski said as quoted by the Bulgarian press on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The bloc will not be the first actor to stop seeking new government after Prime Minister Boyko Borisov resigned earlier in November. Two other parties have already refused to form a new cabinet.

There was hope for a new government as the bloc received support from Patriotic Front, a nationalist coalition, but according to Zelenogorski, the differences between the two coalitions “could not be cleared”. Besides, the Reformist Bloc couldn't get support from GERB, the biggest party in the parliament.

“Apparently there is no reformist majority in Parliament and we are going to elections,” Zelenogorski explained.

President Rosen Plevneliev announced earlier this week that he would hand over the government mandate to Zelenogorski’s RB on Monday. Now, after the RB returns its mandate, the president will have to form an interim government, and his successor Rumen Radev, who takes over on January 22, will have to call an early election.

Radev, a former air force commander and an independent backed by the Socialist Party, won the Bulgarian presidential election on November 13, prompting the prime minister’s coalition government to step down.
