Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011 as opposition groups and Islamic extremists, including the Islamic State and Jabhat Fatah al Sham — formerly known as the Nusra Front — are fighting the Syrian Army in an attempt to topple the legitimate government of President Bashar Assad.
