GENEVA (Sputnik) – A total of 15,234 families or 91,404 people from the provinces of Salah al-Din, Ninewa, Erbil, Baghdad and Anbar have been displaced as a result of the Mosul operations since October 17, according to IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix.
Most of them are from the Ninewa province, where Mosul is located.
Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition against Daesh launched the operation to reclaim Mosul from the extremist group, outlawed in Russia and the United States among others, on October 17.
Mosul, the second biggest Iraqi city, as well as a number of other northern and western Iraqi cities and towns were seized in 2014 during a Daesh offensive.
