TIRASPOL (Sputnik) – Vadim Krasnoselsky, the chairman of the Supreme Council of Transnistria, won the presidential election in the unrecognized republic with 62 percent of votes, the electoral commission said Monday.
The election in the self-proclaimed state, also known as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), took place Sunday.
"According to results of the election, Vadim Krasnoselsky got a bit more than 62 percent of votes. His main opponent Yevgeny Shevchuk – 28 percent," the electoral commission told RIA Novosti.
Transnistria, a region with a predominantly ethical Russian and Ukrainian population, broke away from the Soviet Republic of Moldova in 1990, fearing the country might seek to reunify with neighboring Romania. The move triggered a war that ended in a ceasefire in July 1992, but the conflict has remained unresolved. Russian peacekeepers have been preserving peace in the region, along with their Moldovan and Transnistrian counterparts.
