A Turkish lawmaker said Ankara should maintain dialogue with Syria's legitimate President Bashar Assad.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Turkish authorities will have to tackle the problems related to the ongoing Syrian conflict through a dialogue with incumbent Syria's President Bashar Assad, a Turkish lawmaker from the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) told Sputnik on Monday.

"The problems related to the issue of the Syrian conflict should be solved in cooperation with Syria's legitimate authorities… The dialogue should be held with the 'head of the household.' Even if you do not like him somehow, the rightest way to solve the problem is through the dialogue with him. It is natural and the only right way. At the moment Assad is Syria's legitimate president. Regardless of our stance on Assad we should maintain a dialogue with him," Mustafa Balbay said.

Erdogan Says Turkey's Op in Syria Aimed to 'Put an End to the Rule' of Assad
The so-called Arab Spring protests in Syria that took place in 2011 resulted in clashes between the government forces and opposition. Since then, the Middle Eastern country has been mired in a war between authorities in Damascus, numerous opposition factions, as well as terrorist groups.

Russia and Iran have been supporting the legitimate Syrian government headed by Assad while several other countries, including Turkey, back different opposition groups.
