An Earnest Mistake? WH Spokesman Blames China for Meddling in US Election
10:41 GMT 13.12.2016 (Updated: 11:26 GMT 06.08.2022) It appears that even White House officials can’t make up their minds about which of the United States’ potential rivals meddled in the 2016 presidential election; that is, if there was actually any meddling at all.
As the US government and intelligence agencies continue to chase the phantom traces of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, it appears that White House spokesperson Josh Earnest managed to find out who was really responsible for Donald Trump’s victory.
Well, either that or maybe he simply forgot which foreign power is supposed to be blamed for what.
“What I’ve tried to do is present object facts and I think the objective fact that’s relevant here is the intelligence community, a month before the election, came forward and presented a unanimous view, a high-confidence assessment, that China was engaged in malicious cyber-activity to destabilize our political system,” Earnest proudly announced during a press briefing.
12 December 2016, 06:38 GMT
Yet when puzzled reporters asked the spokesman if they heard him correctly, Earnest swiftly corrected himself and admitted that he meant to say Russia, attributing his apparent slip of the tongue to the “tricky” business of “flipping back and forth between topics.”
Alas, he did not explain why the US government and intelligence agencies appear so eager, if not desperate, to attribute the result of the latest presidential election to some sort of malicious outside influence.
