“By taking additional measures on protecting the information space, we discovered about 26,000 extremist and terror sources, which is twice as more than in 2015, and counter criminal propaganda of a number of organizations and groups in Internet,” Bortnikov said at a session of the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC).
He said that police and FSB managed to liquidate Russian cells of an international Internet community, which had been disseminating radical ideas, recruiting militants for international terror organizations and raising money for terrorist groups such as the Daesh, outlawed in Russia.
Russian special services have killed 129 terrorists and have thwarted at least 42 terrorist attacks since the beginning of 2016 Alexander Bortnikov said.
"129 militants, including 22 leaders of the criminal underworld, have been neutralized and 898 gangsters and their supporters have been detained [in 2016]," Bortnikov said.
He added that terrorist activity has been on decline in Russia.
"Effectiveness of preventive actions taken by the law enforcement agencies and security agencies was increased. 42 crimes of terrorist nature has been averted by joint efforts at the stage of preparations," Bortnikov said.
The Russian security services prevented 86 citizens, who planned to join international terrorist organization abroad, from leaving the country in 2016, Alexander Bortnikov said.
“Additional measures aimed at preventing Russian citizens from participating in [activities of] the international terrorist organizations abroad have been taken. A total of 86 people with such intentions were prevented from leaving Russia,” Bortnikov said at a session of the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC).
He added that the Russian authorities froze bank accounts of more than 2,000 people with terror links.
Bortnikov added that the authorities also managed to stop activities of 34 recruiters, who tried to involve Russians in activities of terrorist organizations.
